There are 2 main standards for safety footwear: ASTM 2413 & EN ISO 20345. Besides these 2 main standards, Safety Jogger pays attention to other safety footwear standards as well (AS/NZS, JIS, LA, SNI, SIRIM, GOST, OHSC) but they are generally based on ASTM & ISO, which are explained below.

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is a globally recognised organisation that develops voluntary technical standards for materials, products, systems, and services. In 2005, ASTM replaced the old ANSI footwear standards with two new standards — ASTM F2413 (Performance Requirements for Protective Footwear) and ASTM F2412 (Test Methods for Foot Protection). These collectively define how safety footwear is tested and certified in the United States and internationally.

The latest version, ASTM F2413-18, further refines the requirements for protective footwear. It sets clear criteria for impact and compression resistance, puncture protection, metatarsal coverage, conductive and electrical hazard insulation, and static dissipative performance. One key distinction of ASTM-compliant footwear is its electrical insulation, as the outsole must protect against electric shock in accordance with the rated class (EH, SD, or CD).

Safety shoes meeting ASTM F2413-18 are widely accepted in Singapore and other international markets, especially in industries such as construction, oil & gas, and manufacturing.

The current safety footwear standard across Europe is EN ISO 20345:2022, which replaces the 2011 version. This updated standard introduces stricter testing methods and new classifications to ensure higher levels of protection and comfort in modern workplaces.

All certified safety footwear must provide toe protection against a 200-joule impact, meaning the toe cap can withstand the equivalent of a 20 kg object dropped from one meter — preventing injuries from falling tools or heavy equipment.

Under the EN ISO 20345:2022 standard, safety shoes are tested and classified into various protection levels, such as S1 to S7, depending on their features like slip resistance, water resistance, and puncture protection. Each safety class defines the minimum requirements a shoe must meet for its intended use.
